Design Built Around How a Space Functions

Interior design often begins with aesthetics. At Sage & Cove Studio, it begins with structure.

How does the room actually work?
How do people move through it?
Where does the eye settle?

These questions shape every design decision.

Katie’s background in construction and environmental consulting means spaces are evaluated not just for appearance, but for the underlying logic that makes them comfortable to live in.

Design becomes the process of aligning form with function.

When a Space No Longer Works

Many homes reach a point where the space stops working.

Furniture layouts feel awkward.

Storage solutions fail.

Rooms feel crowded yet unfinished.

The issue is rarely the individual pieces. It is how those pieces relate to the architecture of the home.

A Structured Design Process

Each design project begins with a detailed understanding of how the home is used and what the space can realistically support. From there, the design process may include:

• Spatial planning and furniture layout
• Colour and material strategy
• Lighting considerations
• Furniture and fixture selection
• Styling and finishing details

Rather than layering in excess, the process focuses on restraint and balance.

Enough to create impact. Never so much that the space feels crowded.

The Process

The process begins with a consultation to understand how the home is currently functioning and where it is falling short.

Layouts are then refined to improve flow and support daily routines. From there, materials, finishes, and furniture selections are developed to bring the space into alignment with the architecture of the home.

Implementation focuses on completing the space with clarity and cohesion so the design feels intentional from room to room.
